The Dirt - Get Returns on Your Garden Investment

Fearing the freeze and the sustainability of your plants? Fall is here which means it’s a great time to consider planting perennials. The heat was intense this summer and hard on our landscape investments. Replacing plants may be necessary. Honestly, for most, the gainful objective is that gardeners want plants that are going to go the distance! Incorporating perennials into your garden is a great way to get the most bang for your buck!

I always encourage gardeners to walk their garden, even in the winter when it’s cold. The lion’s share of landscapes will have a high traffic, high profile area(s) where we like to plant annuals to get a bright pop of color. Maybe it’s by your front door or along a path of circulation that meanders through the garden. Some people have large pieces of property and might want to transition to becoming a low maintenance gardener. Whatever the reason, you should definitely consider plants that come back year after year without the added expense of buying new. Perennials come in all shapes and sizes suitable for any location. Below are just a few of the benefits of adding perennials to achieve long-lasting enjoyment for years to come.

P E R E N N I A L S….

Propagate easily for more plants at no expense. They can be divided into multiple plants or seeds collected and shared with co-workers and friends.

Easy on the body as you just plant once, not every season! Save your achy knees and back!

Reblooms! They come back every year, usually bigger and more prolific. By the third year your perennial should reach its maximum size.

Economical over time because you don’t have to keep buying new.

New growth if cut back. If your perennials get leggy then it’s time for a haircut.

Salvia is a classic example of this.

Not fussy. Did your annuals struggle this year in the heat? Perennials seem to have amnesia as they come back year after year no matter the struggles. Zone 9 perennials are tough!

Interesting focal plants in your garden. Maybe you have evergreen shrubs as the core plantings but want to add some color diversity for each season. There are perennials for every season.

Available in all colors and sun/soil requirements for year-long color at the garden center now.

Likes deadheading so it can focus energy on producing new blooms

Satisfying…need I say more?!

As always, we are happy to discuss options for your garden! Feel free to bring in pictures of your yard or areas where you need to fill and one of our garden specialists will be happy to offer suggestions.
