The Delta Series boasts wonderful dark burgundy foliage and bright contrasting blooms of white, red, lavender, and several variations of pink. Plus, they only grow eight to 12 feet tall! The mature size of a crape myrtle is the most important factor to consider when buying these trees.
Why is the size is so important?
The mature size of the Crape Myrtle is crucial while shopping because that’s the growth you should plan for and expect. If you plant a Crape Myrtle that can reach heights up to 24 feet tall and then prune it back each winter to only grow 10 feet tall, you are likely affecting the overall health of your tree.
You may recall our post earlier this year about pruning Crape Myrtles. Light pruning is absolutely fine for Crape Myrtles, just as you would prune any other tree or shrub. Unfortunately, a lot of people severely prune Crape Myrtles to control the growth and keep their trees small. There are several reasons why we urge customers to avoid ‘crape murder’ as it’s now commonly known.
As a reminder, drastically cutting back Crape Myrtles weakens their growth and make them more susceptible to insects, like aphids or Japanese beetles. Severely cutting them back does not produce more flowers either, despite this common misconception.
The good news is there are lots of options! To the surprise of many, there are Crape Myrtles ranging from two feet up to 30 feet tall. Wherever you choose to plant a Crape Myrtle, just be sure the one you select has plenty of room to reach its full potential without hindering its natural growth.

The gorgeous Delta Series is now available at the Garden Center! The vibrant foliage doesn’t fade in the hot summer sun, but they do need well-drained soil and you can feed them with rose food.
