We are so excited about our newest stock of citrus and fruit trees that just arrived at the Garden Center! We received a huge variety, including avocados, apples, oranges, kumquats, peaches, pears, blackberries, and blueberries just to name a few. Now is a great time to plant citrus and fruit trees while they’re dormant.
What a fulfilling labor of love it is to plant and nurture trees that produce fruit! Thanks to the generally mild weather in the Houston area, many citrus and fruit trees thrive here. But, the first step is selecting the right type of fruit tree for your preferences and landscape.
As blooms start filling your garden, you may be tempted to not cut your plants for homemade arrangements. You can and should though! Enjoy the fruits, or florals rather, of your labor while encouraging new growth thanks to periodic cuttings.
Believe it or not, when you occasionally cut blooms from your flowering plants, you are promoting more blooms! Different types of flowers must be harvested at appropriate stages in their development though. Flowers with multiple buds on each stem should have at least one bud showing color and one bud starting to open before being cut. On the other hand, flowers that grow on individual stems should be cut when fully open.
Growing herbs doesn’t have to be difficult or time consuming, but a lot of people are discouraged to try gardening these edibles.
The key to successful herb gardening is well-drained soil. Standard soil is generally too heavy and holds too much water for herbs. Try a combination of two parts organic potting soil, perlite for added drainage benefits, and compost for ideal nutrient-rich growing conditions.
Given herbs preference for dry soil, consider growing your herbs in containers! In addition to better control of the soil and drainage, planting your herbs in containers will also make them portable. So, if you need to protect your plants from the elements, you can easily move them to another location. Herbs like oregano, sage, lavender, and mint do well in containers, enjoy full sun, and of course well-drained soil.
Winter is the best time to prune trees and shrubs, except spring flowering varieties. Why prune now? You can help promote new growth, it’s easier to see the shape of deciduous plants while most foliage is gone, and you can prune out dead or diseased branches while sap is low. For optimum health, your trees need attention all year long.

Despite the ambiguous name, tea scale is actually a small insect that can ruin all your hard work in the garden while hiding on the underside of leaves. Fortunately, there’s an easy treatment available!
