A New Yard – What do I look for?

Now that you’ve settled into the new house and now it’s time to make your yard all you want it to be.  You will have to be a detective to try to unearth the secrets your yard holds.  Let’s start our quest, you need to walk your yard and look for low spots, soggy spots, or discolored spots.  You need to determine if you need to add topsoil to those low spots, drainage if there is soggy spots or fertilizer for discolored spots.  The next part of our quest will be to look at the flower beds and really investigate them.  Do the borders look well maintained, are there weeds, is there enough mulch and how do the plants look?  If the borders are looking shabby maybe you need to replace or update them.  If you’ve got weeds it’s time to start pulling them.  If the mulch is low it’s probably time to add some.  Look at your plants, do they look like they are thriving, which means they are healthy green plants with nice blooms.  If they don’t look good you may need to fertilize them.  You may need to talk to a garden center employee that can help you figure out what your plant needs. The final part of our quest, to see if your yard speaks to the soul.  Take a look from the road and see what your yard says to your heart.  Does it make you want to linger for a while?  Does it make you want to take your shoes off and walk in the lush grass?  Does it just add a smile to your face and you don’t why?  If it doesn’t answer one of those questions it’s time to make some changes!

A New Yard – Make those changes!

Finally, we get to the fun part, making your yard speak to your heart. Now that you have all the investigative data, you are ready for a trip to your local garden center.  On a side note, the staff at a Warren’s will be your biggest support in having a yard that makes your soul sing!  It’s time to put the garden center staff to the test and believe me they are up to the challenge.  The staff will want to know, what kind of light do you get?  Is it morning sun or afternoon sun?  How many hours a day of sun do you get?  They will also want to see photos of your yard.  If you noticed unhealthy plants bring a sample with you, so the staff can help you diagnose the problem.

You’ve been to the garden center, gotten plants that speak to your heart, gotten solutions for any problems and picked up your supplies.  You’ve done a lot of work already, you’ve pulled weeds, and made repairs to any flower bed borders. You’ve treated any problems in the lawn and gotten your lawn on a fertilizing schedule.  Now, you are finally ready to create the excitement your yard has been missing.  When you add new plants, garden art or containers place everything in your yard and step back to take a look.  Rearrange it until you find a placement that you love!  Make sure your placement accounts for height of the plants.  Also, don’t plant them to close together plants need room to grow.

As you work on the yard of your dreams remember some key things.  First, gardening is a process that should fill your heart with joy.  Second, feed your plants and they will feed your soul.  Lastly, water your plants and your soul will never thirst.  Always enjoy your yard like a child!  May you always delight in the sights, sounds and feel of the grass!
